Houdon, Jean-Antoine
(20 mar. 1741, Versalles, Francia–15 jul. 1828, París).

Escultor francés. Estudió con Jean-Baptiste Pigall en París y en 1761 ganó el Premio de Roma. En esta ciudad, (1764–68) alcanzó fama inmediata con el estudio anatómico de un hombre de pie ( 1767), cuyo molde fue ampliamente usado en academias de arte. Con su Morfeo reclinado se convirtió en miembro de la Academia Real en París (1777). Esculpió numerosas obras religiosas y mitológicas, claras expresiones del estilo rococó decorativo escultórico del s. XVIII. Su mayor fortaleza fue su capacidad para captar la individualidad de sus retratados, que incluían lumbreras como Denis Diderot, Catalina II la Grande, Benjamin Franklin, el marqués de Lafayette y Voltaire. En EE.UU. hizo una estatua de mármol de George Washington (1788). La vivacidad de la fisionomía y el carácter de sus bustos lo sitúan entre los mejores escultores de retrato en la historia.
